{"id":989,"date":"2017-07-25T15:06:31","date_gmt":"2017-07-25T22:06:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.matthewsrosin.com\/?p=989"},"modified":"2017-07-25T15:06:31","modified_gmt":"2017-07-25T22:06:31","slug":"poem-threshold-2009","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.matthewsrosin.com\/?p=989","title":{"rendered":"Poem: &#8220;Threshold&#8221; (2009)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: 0; width: 100%; height: 42px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=3135950312\/size=small\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=0687f5\/transparent=true\/\" width=\"300\" height=\"150\" seamless=\"\"><a href=\"http:\/\/godheadscope.bandcamp.com\/album\/threshold\">Threshold by GODHEADSCOPE<\/a><\/iframe><\/p>\n<pre style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: large;\">From the far room,\r\na figure with many faces\r\n\r\nstumbles\r\ninto the hall\u2014\r\n\r\nforgets, for a moment,\r\nthe place of doors.\r\nWalls,\r\n\r\n\tmany colored,\r\n\tbead with sweat.\r\n\r\nHands\r\n\tfumble for edges\r\n\tin the kaleidoscope:\r\ndoorframes\r\nin shifting light.\r\n\r\n\t\tThis one\r\n\t\tdoes not want\r\n\t\tto be found.\r\n\r\nThick air:\r\nfootfalls in puddles\r\nrecall\r\n\r\nwhen breath was all\u2014\r\n\r\nbefore the ceiling\r\nrose, upwelling,\r\n\r\n\tfrom the floor\u2014\r\n\r\nbefore the earth\r\nbroke\r\ninto rooms;\r\n\r\n\tdoors.\r\n\r\n\r\n<center>***<\/center>\r\n\r\nThe dog,\r\n\t\tcurled\r\n\t\twith her ball,\r\nwaits for variation\r\nin the man\r\n\t\tcurled\r\n\t\tby the door.\r\nWhiskers wick\r\nmoisture from air.\r\n\r\nShe breathes in rhythm,\r\nwater dripping;\r\nvoices in the vent.\r\n\r\nEyes intent.\r\n\r\n\t\t\tA shift in the light.\r\n\r\n\t\tFront paws\r\n\t\tbecome palms.\r\n\r\nShe stands;\r\n\r\nglides\r\nacross the room;\r\ngrasps his shoulders.\r\n\r\nShakes him.\r\n\tSpeaks:\r\n\r\n\t\u201cWhy are you\r\n\tbent\r\n\tto the shape of\r\n\r\n\tthe doorway,\r\n\tpressed\r\n\tto the threshold,\r\n\r\n\tpraying,\r\n\twhen you and I\r\n\tcould be playing?\u201d\r\n\r\nThe dog,\r\n\t\tcurled\r\n\t\twith her ball,\r\nwaits for variation\r\nin the man\r\n\t\tcurled\r\n\t\tby the door.\r\nWhiskers wick\r\nmoisture from air.\r\n\r\n\r\n<center>***<\/center>\r\n\r\nShe has not touched\r\na moment\r\nin days.\r\n\r\n\t\tGaunt.\r\n\t\tPaper skin.\r\n\r\nShe sits at the table.\r\n\r\nImages assess\r\n\tbones,\r\n\tangles.\r\n\r\nMelting ice\r\n\tseeps from the refrigerator,\r\n\r\n\tspreads\r\nacross the floor.\r\n\r\nTouches her toe,\r\ntickles a memory\u2014\r\n\r\n\tanother room.\r\n\r\nShe brought language.\r\nHe brought <em>colores<\/em>,\r\nspoke in broken Spanish.\r\nShe painted <em>flores<\/em>.\r\n\r\n\t\tThin muscles\r\n\t\ttighten with resolve.\r\n\r\nShe stands,\r\n\r\n\tshuffles\r\nacross the floor\u2014\r\n\r\n\t\twater\r\n\t\tsoaks her soles\u2014\r\n\r\nopens\r\nthe door\u2014\r\n\r\n\t\tmore supple skin\r\n\t\tbends with her steps\u2014\r\n\r\nclasps a hand.\r\n\r\n\r\n<center>***<\/center>\r\n\r\nThe air\u2014\r\nhumid with child.\r\n\r\nTwo melodies\r\n\r\n\tintertwine\u2014\r\n\r\nimprovise a whisper:\r\n\r\n\tarms that will need to learn to hold,\r\n\thands that will need to learn to let go.\r\n\r\nA breath\r\ncools their bodies.\r\n\r\n\r\n<center>***<\/center>\r\n\r\nDrip.\r\n\r\n\tDrip.\r\n\r\n\r\n\t\tDrops\r\n\r\n\r\nfall\r\n\r\n\r\n \tpast blue drapes;\r\n\topen window,\r\n\tyellow petals,\r\n\tgreen stems.\r\n\r\nStrike the soil.\r\n\r\n\tSplit.\r\n\r\nSmaller droplets\r\n\r\n\tcling\r\n\r\nto the surface, then\r\nseep toward roots.\r\n\r\nHe reaches,\r\npinches a stem.\r\n\r\n\t\tBreaks the flow.\r\n\r\nPlaces the flower behind\r\nhis daughter\u2019s beaming ear.\r\n\r\n\r\n\t\t\u201cBeautiful,\u201d he says.\r\n\r\nShe smiles.<\/pre>\n<p><em>Published as lyrics for GODHEADSCOPE\u2019s <strong>Threshold<\/strong> LP, 2009.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Threshold by GODHEADSCOPE From the far room, a figure with many faces stumbles into the hall\u2014 forgets, for a moment, the place of doors.
